Radio Roland Garros
A record number of listeners tuned in to become part of the growing audience for Radio Roland Garros, where El is part of a fantastic, funny and knowledgeable team led by Gigi Salmon and also including Marcus Buckland, Simon Cambers, Sophie Amiach, Courtney Walsh and Antoine Benneteau. Radio Roland Garros, which broadcasts from 10.45am on day one until after the last ball is struck of the men’s final, is a huge success story for the French Tennis Federation which has supported its English language radio station for the best part of two decades. That commitment has been matched by a loyal but growing audience around the world, with engaged listeners across the US, UK, Canada, Africa, the Caribbean, Australasia and elsewhere, many of whom regularly interact via email and social media to become part of the conversation. The tone is always informed but often light-hearted and this balance of tennis nous with competitions, jokes and conversational tangents has proved increasingly popular. Marcus has to take “credit” for the commentators’ nicknames, which is why El has become known as “Lady E” to Radio Roland Garros listeners.
